Before Antietam

A physician in Camden, NJ, he was commissioned Major, 3rd New Jersey Infantry on 22 May 1861 and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel about 9 May 1862. He was transferred to the First New Jersey Infantry to date from 14 September 1862.

On the Campaign

Col Torbert, in his Brigade report on Crampton's pass wrote:

I am pleased to make particular mention of Lieutenant-Colonel Collet, Third Regiment New Jersey Volunteers, commanding First Regiment New Jersey Volunteers; Colonel Buck, Second Regiment; Colonel Brown, Third Regiment, and Colonel Hatch, Fourth Regiment, for their bravery, coolness, and the admirable manner in which they handled their regiments.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Colonel of the regiment on 29 November 1862, but was killed in action at Salem Church, VA on 3 May 1863 on the Chancellorsville Campaign.
