Before Antietam
He went to California in 1852 and was a miner and printer. He was a member of the San Francisco Vigilance Committee of 1856, but returned to Vermont soon after and purchased the ancestral farm. In 1860 he was a 33 year old farmer (with his brother Edward) in Bennington, VT. He was commissioned Captain, Company A, 2nd Vermont Infantry on 16 May 1861, and was promoted to Major on 21 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He commanded the regiment in Maryland in 1862 as senior officer present.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 8 January 1863, Colonel on 9 February 1863, and resigned from the service on 1 April 1864.
