Joseph Walker Corning

In 1860 he was a 46 year old lawyer in Palmyra, NY and he was a Representative in the New York State Assembly for Wayne County from 1 January to 16 April 1861. He enrolled on 9 May 1861 and mustered as Captain, Company B, 33rd New York Infantry on 22 MAy. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 3 October 1861.

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

He mustered out with the regiment on 2 June 1863 in Geneva, NY. He enrolled again, in Rochester, as 2nd Lieutenant in the 111th New York Infantry on 23 August 1864, but mustered as Major of the regiment on 10 October 1864. He was discharged to accept the commission of Colonel of the 194th New York Infantry - the final numbered New York regiment - on 3 February 1865 and was discharged on 31 May 1865.

In 1870 he was again a lawyer in practice in Palmyra but was a bookkeeper in the Customs House in New York City by 1880.

He married Julia W James (1818-1871) in Palmyra in October 1838 and they had 7 children. He married again, Louisa Elizabeth Newton (1839-1919), in Novia Scotia in January 1874, and they had 6 more children.

His son John Walker Corning (1841-1911) was a Lieutenant in the 33rd New York 1861-63.

A collection of his uniform items from his time as Lieutenant Colonel of the 33rd Infantry was offered by Heritage Auctions in 2014.
