Before Antietam
Son and grandson of successful Regular Army officers, he served for three months as a Private in Company G of the 7th New York State Militia from April - July 1861. He then enrolled at Great Neck and was commissioned First Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 42nd New York Infantry on 28 June 1861. He was appointed Captain of Company B on 10 February 1862 and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment on 2 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He commanded the regiment in Maryland, and was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was honorably discharged from the Volunteers on 16 March 1863. He enlisted in the 15th US Infantry in August 1864 and was made Sergeant, Company D in the First Battalion. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, USA, then transferred as First Lieutenant to the 7th US Infantry on 12 November 1864.
After the War
He was honored by brevets in 1867 to Captain, USA for gallantry at Antietam and Major for service at Fredericksburg. He continued in Regular Army service, transferring to the 18th Infantry on 28 November 1871. He was promoted to Captain on 6 February 1882 and retired on 21 June 1890.

He married Sallie Russell (1849-1896) in June 1871 in Montana Territory and they had a son George, Jr. (1873-1918, Lieutenant Colonel, USA) who died of pneumonia in November 1918 while serving in France.
