Before Antietam
Jackson was Colonel of the 1st Maine Infantry (3-months reg't) May - August 1861. On September 9, 1861 he was given command of the the 5th Maine (3-years) Infantry. In the battle of Gaines' Mill 27 June 1862 the 5th lost 10 killed, 69 wounded and 16 missing, "its gallant Col. Jackson was carried wounded from the field".
On the Campaign
Jackson was in command of the Regiment at Antietam.
The rest of the War
Col Jackson was promoted to Brigadier General on 24 Sept 1862, and mustered out honorably on 24 Aug 1865.
