Before Antietam
He was Captain in the (3-month) 69th NY State Militia on 9 May 1861 and mustered out 3 Aug 1861. He was appointed Lt Colonel of the 88th NY Volunteers on 14 September 1861, and also received a Regular Army commission as Captain in the 16th US Infantry 26 Ocober 1861.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the 88th, part of the famed Irish Brigade, and led his regiment's charge on the Sunken Road position on September 17th.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Colonel on 20 October 1862 and led the Irish Brigade at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863. He was killed in action at Petersburg, VA on 16 July 1864 at age 42.
