Before Antietam
After graduation from Yale in 1850 he was a civil engineer in Pennsylvania, working on rail and water projects into 1857. He then travelled to Brazil to work on the Dom Pedro Segundo Railroad into 1861, returning to the US at the outbreak of War. He was appointed First Lieutenant, 4th US Artillery on 22 October 1861.
On the Campaign
He commanded Battery F on the Maryland Campaign.
The rest of the War
He served as Regimental Quartermaster, 4th Artillery from 13 August to 29 November 1864 and Regimental Adjutant to 5 January 1865. He resigned his commission on 8 May 1866.
After the War
He returned to engineering, on the Kansas & Pacific Railroad to September 1867, the Reading & Wilmington Railroad until January 1870, surveying a route along the Yellowstone River (1870), and surveying the Texas & Pacific Railroad from Fort Phantom Hill to Fort Bliss on the Rio Grande (to 1872).
