Before Antietam

When he graduated from West Point he was breveted 2nd Lieutenant, 1st US Artillery on 1 July 1847. Hh was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th US Artillery on 13 September 1847 and served in the Mecican War (1846-48). He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 12 September 1850 and was at posts in Texas and Kansas, on the Utah Expedition, and at Fort Randall, Dakota Territory. He was promoted to Captain on 29 April 1861 and commanded a battery in MAryland and the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia 1861-62. He was appointed Chief of Artillery, 5th Army Corps by August 1862 - to the 12th Corps with the Army of the Potomac in September.

On the Campaign

He commanded the 12th Corps Artillery reserve in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Inspector General (AIG), US Volunteers from 15 May 1863 to 4 April 1864. He was honored by brevets to Major and Lieutenant Colonel, USA for his service at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, respectively.

After the War

He continued in the Army and was promoted to Major, 1st US Artillery on 5 February 1867 and Lieutenant Colonel on 15 March 1881. He transferred to the 4th US Artillery on 27 Oct 1881, was appointed Colonel on 2 October 1883, and retired at that rank on 25 April 1888.
