Willis Cox Holt

In 1860 he was a successful 30 year old farmer in Talbot County, GA. He was elected Captain of Company C - the Chattahoochee Beauregards - of the 10th Georgia Infantry on 18 May 1861. He was promoted to Major of the regiment on 4 August 1862.

He led his regiment as senior officer present in Maryland, and was wounded over the eye in fighting at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on the evening of 14 September 1862. He was relieved in command by Captain Loud.

He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel on 2 October 1862 (effective 4 August). He was slightly wounded by a gunshot to his left thigh in May 1864, probably in action in the Wilderness, VA, but returned to duty on 1 June. He was promoted to Colonel on 2 August 1864 (to date from 19 May) and was mortally wounded at Cedar Creek, VA on 19 October 1864. His leg was amputated, but he died of his wounds in a hospital in Woodstock, VA on 18 November 1864.

He married Susannah Bird Bussey (1833-1875) in December 1850 and they had 2 children.
