Before Sharpsburg

He studied the law and started a successful practice in Carnesville, Franklin County, GA in 1855, and was an officer of the Georgia State militia. In 1861 he organized a Company of troops and was elected Captain, Company B, 15th Georgia Infantry on 14 June 1861 at Carnesville. He was elected Lieutenant Colonel on 1 May 1862 and promoted to Colonel of the regiment on 22 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and died of wounds in a field hospital on David Smith's Farm near Sharpsburg later that day.

Buried in Capt. David Smith’s Orchard northeast corner were buried deep; the orchard has been plowed and graves plowed over, but can all be pointed out; some of the boards have been preserved at the house.

The rest of the War

He was reinterred in Hagerstown in about 1874.
