Before Sharpsburg
A member of the first graduating class (1842) at the Virginia Military Institute, he was a lawyer in Buchanan County, VA, Cincinnati, OH, and in New Orleans before the War. He was Lieutenant Colonel and commanded the 3rd Louisiana Battalion and had been captured in action at the Seven Days on the Peninsula on 28 June 1862. He was confined at Ft. Columbus, NY, Ft. Warren, MD, and Fortress Monroe, VA before being exchanged at Aiken's Landing VA on 5 August. While still a prisoner he was appointed Colonel of the 15th Louisiana Infantry as it organized in Richmond in July.
On the Campaign
He commanded the 15th Louisiana Infantry on the Maryland Campaign.
The rest of the War
He was wounded in action at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863. He was absent, sick or recovering, for most of 1863 and 1864. He probably did not return to his Regiment until 1865. He was paroled at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865.
After the War
He was an attorney in Lexington, VA, was Virginia State Senator 1869 - 71, and on the Board of Visitors of the Virginia Military Institute 1873 - 77.
