Before Sharpsburg

He practiced law and edited Danville's Democratic Appeal before the Civil War, and was elected the city's Commonwealth Attorney in September 1858. He enrolled as Major of the 18th Virginia Infantry on 25 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

In October 1863 he was appointed provost-marshal of the city of Petersburg. He commanded the regiment in the Wilderness, VA in May 1864, was wounded at Drewry's Bluff, VA on 16 May, and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 27 July 1864.

After the War

He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth and five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1887) from Virginia.
