Henry Middleton Rutledge

He was elected Major of the 25th North Carolina Regiment as it was organized in August 1861. When the Army was reorganized in Spring 1862, he was elected Lieutenant Colonel (commissioned May 1862). He was promoted Colonel soon after, replacing Colonel St.Clair Dearing, who resigned in early or mid-1862.

Colonel Rutledge remained in command of the 25th Regiment for the duration of the War.

He returned to South Carolina in 1865 and managed Hampton Plantation - his family home.

His son Archibald Rutledge published a memoir about his father called "My Colonel and His Lady" in 1937. The Colonel was a direct descendent of Colonial Governor John, and Declaration of Independence signer Edward Rutledge.
