Before Sharpsburg
Age 27, from Wilson County, he was commissioned Captain of Company B of the Second Regiment, North Carolina State Troops on 16 May 1861.
On the Campaign
After Colonel Tew was killed in the Sunken Road on 17 September, Captain Howard was senior officer standing, and assumed command of the regiment. He was mortally wounded and captured in action thereafter.
The rest of the War
He was promoted Major to date from 17 September but died of his wounds on 4 October 1862 in Boonsboro. He was originally "buried in Dr. Smith's field". Probably reinterred at Hagerstown in about 1874.
