Before Sharpsburg

A graduate of VMI (1853) and the William & Mary Law School (1856), he was a lawyer and businessman in Middlesex, King, and Owen Counties, VA before the War. He was commissioned Major in May 1861 and commanded "Virginia (Montague's) Battalion" and fought at Big Bethel, VA. The 53rd Regiment Virginia Infantry was organized in December by the consolidation of Montague's and Tomlin's Battalions and Waddill's Company of Virginia Infantry. Montague was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 53rd Virginia Infantry to date from 9 November 1861. He was elected Colonel of the 32nd Virginia Infantry in May 1862, but was ill with Typhoid til July when he returned to command the Regiment.

On the Campaign

He commanded the Regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was ill again in December 1864 and was surrendered and paroled in Richmond on 24 April 1865.

After the War

He was a lawyer in Richmond and in business in King and Queen County, VA.
