Before Sharpsburg
A 27 year old farmer and civil engineer, he mustered as Private, Company C, 3rd Virginia Cavalry on 24 May 1861 at Black Walnut, VA. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in August 1861 and Captain in December 1861.
On the Campaign
He assumed command as senior officer present after Lieutenant Colonel Thornton was killed at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Lieutenant, date not given. He was wounded in action at Todd's Tavern, VA on 7 May 1864, and lost a finger on his left hand. He was ill in a hospital in March 1865 with no further military record.
