He enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant of Company B, 13th Georgia Infantry on 8 July 1861 at Griffin, GA and was "wounded by his own picket while posting guard ... in the left thigh" near Sewell Mountain, VA (now WV) on 26 October 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 2 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

His father William H.P. [Head Pearson] Adair applied for his final pay in May 1863, and wrote that James had no wife or children. William had a tavern and probably a tailor shop in Greenville, Meriwether County, GA.
