Fleet William Cox

He had attended the University of Virginia, graduated from VMI, and was a farmer, teacher, politician, and lawyer before the War. In May 1861 he enlisted in the 40th Virginia Infantry as Captain, Company K. He was elected Major of the Regiment in April 1862, and promoted to Lieutenenat Colonel on 26 August.

He led the regiment in Maryland while Colonel Brockenbrough had command of the brigade.

He was wounded and lost an eye at Chancellorsville on 3 May 1863 and was absent recuperating through August. He was elected to the Virginia Legislature in September 1863 and was at Richmond, gone from his Regiment, in that service. He was listed as absent without leave as a result, in November 1864, and retired from active service to the Invalid Corps in February 1865. He was captured in Westmoreland County 12 May 1865 and imprisoned in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC, charged as a "bandit leader," but was released 28 June 1865.
