David Warren Garrett

He mustered as Private, Company C, 42nd Virginia Infantry on 18 May 1861 in Lisbon, VA. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 22 June 1861. He was wounded in the chest in action at Kernstown, VA on 23 March 1862.

He commanded the Regiment as senior officer present after Captan Withers succeeded to Brigade.

He was wounded again, in the foot in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 2 October 1863. He was captured (place not given) and held at Fort Delaware on 12 March 1864, but was back on duty by the end of the month. He was promoted to Captain on 5 May 1864. A week later he was captured again, at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and imprisoned at Point Lookout, MD. He was transferred to Fort Delaware on 25 June, to Hilton Head, SC on 20 August, to Morris Island on 7 September, and finally, to Fort Pulaski, GA on 21 October 1864. He took the oath of allegiance and was released on 16 June 1865.

For some period he lived in Morganton, GA.
