Before Sharpsburg

A lawyer and member of the Georgia House of Representatives, he was commissioned Colonel of the 48th Georgia Infantry on 3 March 1862. He was wounded in action at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland. He assumed command of the Brigade at Sharpsburg on 17 September after General Wright and Colonel Jones were wounded.

The rest of the War

He was again wounded and captured in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He was exchanged in April 1864 and resigned his commission on 12 November 1864.

After the War

He was elected to the Georgia Senate in 1867 and was later a superior court judge until 1879.
