Samuel William Marshborne

"Sam Marshborne arrived in Georgia from North Carolina in September 1859. He came from a family which had been in NC since the Colonial days. His grandfather Daniel Marshborne had served as a private from NC in the Revolutionary War. The Marshbornes were both well respected and economically established in their community."

"In October 1859 Sam Bought a 202 1/2 acre farm and built a house where he would live with his wife and mother-in-law. He soon became an established member of his adopted community and became a member of the local masonic lodge (the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #130) in Fayetteville. Although the Marshborne farm was modest by most standards, Sam did own two slaves, Isaac and Ben to help with the chores. In 1861 he was elected sheriff to Fayette County."

He enrolled in Company C, 53rd Georgia Infantry as Captain on 1 May 1862.

He assumed command of the Regiment at Sharpsburg when Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Sloan was wounded early on 17 September 1862.

"Wounded in the battle of Cedar Creek VA, [19 October 1864], Captain Marshborne was taken to the General Hospital in Harrisburg [Harrisonburg] VA where he died on November 15, 1864. He is believed to be buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Harrisburg [Harrisonburg], VA, but the gravesite has not been found."
