Before Sharpsburg
He was appointed to the US Military Academy in 1842, but did not pass the entrance examinations. He served as a First Lieutenant and Assistant Adjutant General in the Mexican War, and was a lawyer in Alachua County, FL before the War. He mustered as Colonel of the 5th Florida Infantry in March 1862.
On the Campaign
He took command of the Brigade at Sharpsburg after General Pryor assumed command of the Division on 17 September 1862. He was later wounded in both thighs in action there.
The rest of the War
Disabled by his wounds, he resigned on 6 July 1863.
After the War
He continued his legal practice. He was murdered in 1869.
