He enrolled and was commissioned First Lieutenant of Company E, 5th Florida Infantry on 26 February 1862 in Madison County, FL and was was elected Major at the reorganization on 8 April 1862.
On the Campaign
He took command of the regiment as next senior officer after Lieutenant Colonel Lamar was wounded at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was wounded in action at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863 while in command of the Regiment. He was cashiered from the service - dismissed by order of a court martial - on 11 April 1864.
