A "prominent Reidsville citizen and clerk of the Superior Court", he was elected Captain of Company B, the 'Tattnall Rangers', of the 61st Georgia Infantry on 3 August 1861, and promoted Major 31 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He assumed command of the Regiment when Col Lamar took over the Brigade on the 17th at Sharpsburg, but he was killed in action there.
