Before Sharpsburg
He had been prominent in Norfolk, VA in the pharmaceutical business and in 1860 was a 33 year old druggist there. He was commissioned Captain of Company D, 6th Virginia Infantry on 6 May 1861.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the depleted Regiment as senior officer present at Crampton's Gap on 14 September 1862 and at Sharpsburg on 17 September.
The rest of the War
He was detailed on recruiting duty in January 1863 and paroled 9 April 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA.
After the War
He was again in the drug and auction businesses, and was twice elected Mayor of the City of Norfolk. He served briefly when first elected in 1866, but was "removed by military authorities" - presumably occupying Federal troops. He was elected again in 1872 and served his full term (to 1874). He was also elected City Collector and by 1880 he was again an auctioneer in Norfolk. He was active in Confederate Veteran and Masonic groups.
