Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 24 year old clerk in Baton Rouge, LA. He enrolled at Camp Moore, LA on 19 June 1861 as Senior 2nd Lieutenant of Company A - the Creole Guards (from East Baton Rouge Parish) - of the 8th Louisiana Infantry, and was acting Adjutant until about October 1861, when he was formally appointed (First Lieutenant and) Adjutant. He was elected Major of the Regiment on 7 May 1862, shortly after the April army reorganization.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the regiment in Maryland as the senior officer presenst. He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted Lieutenant Colonel on 15 October 1862 (but may have held that rank at Sharpsburg) and returned from his Sharpsburg wound on 29 March 1863. He was appointed Colonel of the Regiment on 6 April and captured near Fredericksburg, VA on 3 May and returned, exchanged, at or slightly before the battle of Gettysburg, where he was killed on 2 July 1863, in the attack on Cemetery Hill.
