Before Sharpsburg

He was a planter in southwest Georgia, a professor at the University of Georgia and then a lawyer, He was serving in the state legislature at the start of the war, but resigned to be Captain of Company C - the "Georgia Troopers" - one the 4 original cavalry companies making up Cobb's Legion's Cavalry Battalion. He was promoted to Major on 23 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He assumed command of the Cavalry Battalion after Lieutenant Colonel Young was wounded in the cavalry action at Quebec Schoolhouse near Middletown on 13 September.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 1 November 1862 and was wounded in action near Gettysburg, PA in July 1863. He was mortally wounded at Jack's Shop near Madison, VA on 21 September 1863 and captured. He died of gangrene on 2 October 1863 in a hospital in Washington, DC.
