Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 20 year old living with his recently widowed father and 7 siblings on their farm in Orange County, NC. He enlisted at Fort Macon, NC on 1 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in the Orange Guards - Company G, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 31 August.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #2 in Richmond, VA on 4 December, transferred to Chimborazo #3 on 16 December, and died there of pneumonia/typhoid fever on 12 January 1863. His father filed for his final pay in March 1863.
