Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 28 year old farm worker on his parent's place near Bethel in Pitt County, NC. He enlisted as a Private in Company H, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 April 1861 at Greenville, and was appointed First Corporal on 26 April.
On the Campaign
He was reported missing in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 with no later military record.
