Before Antietam

He graduated from the USMA in 1835, resigned from the US Army in 1850, and became a college president. In May 1861 he was appointed Inspector General of the State of New York, and in March 1862 appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers commanding the 2nd Brigade/ 3rd Division/I Corps in the defenses of Washington. He commanded the 3rd Brigade/1st Division/ III Corps at Second Bull Run and Chantilly.

On the Campaign

He led the 3rd Brigade/First Division of the First (I) Corps.

The rest of the War

He was made Provost Marshal of the Army of the Potomac and later all armies operating against Richmond. Later he commanded the District of Henrico (Richmond).

After the War

Post War Career: Governor of soldiers' home.
