On the Sharpsburg Campaign
The battery accompanied Ewell's Division (Gen. ALexander Lawton, commanding) in T.J. Jackson command on their march from Frederick, MD to Harpers Ferry, VA from 10 to 13 September 1862. They were initially posted with the infantry on School House Ridge near the Ferry, but 2 or 3 of their Napoleons were among a battalion of 10 guns sent across the Shenandoah River to a position on the Nisewarner Farm on a plateau about 360 feet above the river on the slopes of Loudon Heights on the evening of 14 September. They spent much of the night hacking a road to get their guns into position and it was full daylight on September 15 before they joined other artillery units - including the remaining gun or guns of their battery on School House Ridge - firing on Union artillery and infantry positions on Bolivar Heights. The Federals surrendered the post that morning.
This battery remained at Harpers Ferry afterward to refit and rest its exhausted horses, and was ordered to Sharpsburg sometime after noon on 17 September. They arrived on the field late in the day and were not engaged there.
