Unit history

Wilfred E. Cutshaw raised the Jackson Artillery, also known as the Winchester Light Artillery, in Frederick County, Virginia in mid-March 1862. During its brief existence, Cutshaw's Battery participated in the 1862 Valley Campaign, the Seven Days fighting, and the Maryland Campaign.

On the Sharpsburg Campaign

The battery was present with the command at Harpers Ferry on 14-15 September, but was not engaged there. A gun of the battery was in action at the southern end of the Confederate line along the Harpers Ferry Road on the afternoon of 17 September at Sharpsburg.

Tablet #355: Reserve Artillery, Army of Northern Virginia - 16 Sep, 12 PM to 18 Sep, 6 AM

After the Sharpsburg Campaign

After Sharpsburg, the battery's depleted condition necessitated its consolidation with the Alleghany Artillery (Special Orders of Oct 2, 1862), and it ceased to exist as a unit.
