Before Sharpsburg

Graduated from the USMA in 1854, saw duty on the Pacific coast, and resigned from the US Army in March 1861. He was appointed Capt. of CSA Artillery and served on recruiting duty in Baltimore (!?). In May 1861 he was appointed Colonel of the 13th North Carolina Regiment and led them on the Peninsula campaign and at Seven Pines. In June 1862 he was made Brigadier General and commanded Pender's Brigade in A. P. Hill's Light Division at Cedar Mountain and Harpers Ferry.

He commanded Pender's Brigade in A. P. Hill's Light Division in Jackson's Command.

The rest of the War

He continued in command of his Brigade at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. In May 1863 he was promoted to Major General commanding Pender's Division/III Corps at Gettysburg, where he was wounded. He did not recover from infection and amputation, and died near Staunton, VA on 18 July, 1863.
