From Smeltzer, he enlisted in Company C, 7th Wisconsin Infantry on 9 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Wounded again in action at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863 and honored by brevet to Captain on that date. He was killed in action on 5 May 1864 in the Wilderness, VA.
