Born in Germany, he was a 26 year old riverman in New Orleans when he enlisted in Company C, 14th Louisiana Infantry on 6 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded and captured in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

Admitted to US Army General Hospital No. 5 in Frederick, MD on 10 October, and sent to Ft. McHenry on 13 October. Transferred to Fortress Monroe, VA and declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. Reported as a deserted in December 1863. Noted as "a good soldier while he was in the Company".
