Before Antietam
In 1860 he was an 18 year old farmer living with his parents on their prosperous farm at Canandaigua, NY. He enlisted on 14 May 1861 in Geneva, Ontario County, NY, to serve two years and mustered on 22 May as a Private in Company I, 33rd New York Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was discharged for disability from wounds on 6 February 1863, at the New Convalescent Camp, VA. He enlisted again, on 9 October 1863, and was a Private in Company H, 100th New York Infantry. He was discharged on 12 October 1865.
After the War
At the Veteran's Census of 1890 he was in Dundee, Yates County, NY and he lived there to at least 1910, by then 69 years old and a laborer doing odd jobs.
