Before Antietam
By 1845 he and his brother George were in business together as linen merchants in Philadelphia, PA, doing business through other Raphaels (probably manufacturers) back in County Antrim. He enrolled in Philadelphia on 13 June 1861 and mustered there as Captain, Company C, 28th Pennsylvania Infantry on 3 July. He was promoted to Major on 1 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was with his regiment at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
At the time of his after-action report, 23 September 1862, he was in command of the regiment. He resigned his commission on 15 January 1863.
After the War
He was still in Philadelphia to at least 1870.
