Before Antietam
He was at First Bull Run in July 1861 as a Sergeant in Company K, 69th New York State Militia, mustering out at the end of their 90-day Federal service on 3 August 1861. He enrolled on 10 September 1861 in New York City, to serve three years, and mustered in as First Lieutenant, Company C, 88th New York Infantry on 30 September 1861. He was promoted to Captain on 1 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862, shot through the head while in command of his Company.
