He mustered into service as Private, Company F, 22nd Pennsylvania Infantry on 23 April 1861 and mustered out with them on 7 August 1861. He then enlisted as Corporal, Company E, 106th Pennsylvania Infantry on 28 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged for wounds on 19 February 1863.
