A 17 year old farmer, he gave his age as 19 when he enlisted at Erie, PA and mustered into service as Private, Company H, 111th Pennsylvania Infantry on 3 October 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on detached duty and mustered out with his Company on 10 July 1865.
