Age 22, he enlisted on 5 August 1862 in Media and mustered as Private, Company G, 124th Pennsylvania Infantry on 9 August in Harrisburg.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his Company on 16 May 16, 1863. He enlisted again and mustered in as Private, Battery M, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery on 26 February 1864 in Petersburg, VA. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 September and to First Sergeant on 1 May 1865. He mustered out on 9 November 1865.
