Before Sharpsburg
Robert's father was first cousin to Robert E Lee, and the Randolphs had been prominent in Virginia since before the Revolution. He was born in Fauquier County, and had graduated from the University of Virginia Law School. In 1858 he was elected First Lieutenant at the initial organization of the militia cavalry company to be called the Black Horse Cavalry.
The Black Horse entered Confederate service in April 1861, and Randolph was elected Captain in September 1861.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to Major of the Regiment 4 September 1863, and Lieutenant Colonel 11 February 1864. He was killed by a sharpshooter during the defense of Richmond in May 1864.
