A 25 year old farmer in Monongahela, he enlisted in West Newton on 24 June 1861. He mustered into service as Corporal, Company F, 12th Pennsylvania Reserves on 10 August in Harrisburg.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
