He mustered into service as Corporal, Company C, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry on 11 August 1862.

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He died at a hospital in Hagerstown, MD on 28 September 1862. He was initially buried in a plot near the Alms House in Hagerstown.
