Lieutenant Colonel

Joseph Powhatan Minetree

(1839 - 1907)

Home State: Virginia

Education: Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1859;Class Rank: 16/19

Command Billet: Regimental Officer

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 41st Virginia Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

From Petersburg, VA, he enrolled on 12 July 1861 as First Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 41st Virginia Infantry. He was elected Major 3 May 1862, wounded at Malvern Hill, VA on 1 July 1862, and appointed Lieutenant Colonel 15 August 1862.1

On the Campaign

Although seen in some references as being in command in Maryland while Colonel Parham led the brigade, it is unlikely, because he was absent in hospitals and on furlough recovering from his Malvern Hill wounds until April 1863. 1 If present, he would have been in command of the regiment while Colonel Parham commanded the brigade.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again on 6 May 1864 at the Wilderness, VA and was absent recovering until September.1,2 He was in command and still Lieutenant Colonel when he was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.2

After the War

He was later a builder and purchasing agent for the Southern Railway Company. He was President of VMI Board of Visitors from 1882-1884.1
