Before Antietam

Born in England, he accompanied his family to Philadelphia on 30 August 1852. In 1854 sailed as crew aboard the Vanguard to Liverpool. He remained in England visiting family for about a year, then returned to Philadelphia. He enlisted and mustered into service in Company G, 4th Pennsylvania Reserves on 29 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate on January 20, 1863.
