Before Antietam

A politician and lawyer from Frederick, he had been in the State Senate from Carroll County (1838-43). 1

He entered service on 28 November 1861 as Colonel, 1st Maryland Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade (Militia). He was also commander of the Brigade, though it never served as a consolidated unit.2

The rest of the War

He resigned from service on 26 August 1864.2

After the War

After 1865 he resumed his law practice. He was Delegate from Frederick County to the 1867 Constitutional Convention of Maryland, and unsuccesful candidate for Congress in that year. He was Judge on the Maryland Court of Appeals, 1870-71.1

His son, William P., Jr., was 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the Regiment.2
