Age 31, he enlisted on 2 September 1861 in Norristown and mustered as Private, Company D, 51st Pennsylvania Infantry on 20 September 1861 in Harrisburg.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the Locust Spring field hospital near Keedysville, MD but died there of wounds on 18 (or 19) October 1862.
