Before Antietam

He enlisted in April 1861 as First Sergeant, Company D, 71st Pennsylvania Infantry and mustered on 28 May 1861 as Sergeant Major of the Regiment. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company B on 6 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds in Sedgwick's Division field hospital on the Simon Wyand farm farm near Keedysville on 21 September 1862.
