Before Antietam
About age 46, he enrolled and mustered as Captain of Company I, 19th Pennsylvania Infantry for 3 months' service on 27 April 1861 in Philadelphia. He mustered out with his Company on 29 August. He again enrolled, on 1 October 1861 and mustered as Captain, Company I, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry on 31 October in Philadelphia.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the leg in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He transferred to Company F, 186th Pennsylvania Infantry on 25 May 1864 and mustered out on 15 August 1865.
